چکیده

We present a sample of 171 candidate groups and clusters of galaxies at intermediate redshift over an area of ≈ 550 sq. degrees at the South Galactic Pole, selected by using optically identified radio sources from the NRAO VLA Sky Survey as tracers of dense environments. Out of these 171 candidates, 76 have a counterpart in the literature while 95 of them are previously unknown clusters. This paper presents the cluster selection technique, based on the search of excesses in the optical surface density of galaxies near identified radiogalaxies, and the first spectroscopic results aimed to confirm the presence of a cluster. Spectroscopy for 11 candidates led to the detection of 9 clusters at redshift in the range 0.13 ÷ 0.3, with estimated velocity dispersions ranging from values typical of clusters to those of galaxy groups. These results show that this technique represents a powerful tool for the selection of homogeneous samples of intermediate redshift clusters over a wide range of richness.

Radio – Optically Selected Clusters of Galaxies I . The Radiogalaxy Sample

In order to study the status and the possible evolution of clusters of galaxies at intermediate redshifts (z ∼ 0.1 − 0.3), as well as their spatial correlation and relationship with the local environment, we built a sample of candidate groups and clusters of galaxies using radiogalaxies as tracers of dense environments. This technique – complementary to purely optical or X-ray cluster selection...

A Radio Survey of Seven Southern X-ray Luminous Clusters of Galaxies

The Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) has been used at 1.38 and 2.38 GHz to survey seven southern Abell clusters of galaxies with high X-ray luminosities: A2746, A2837, A3126, A3216, A3230, A3827 and A3836. The clusters have also been surveyed at 0.843 GHz with the Molonglo Observatory Synthesis Telescope (MOST). We have listed a complete 1.38GHz sample of 149 radio sources within the Ab...

The UV-optical colours of brightest cluster galaxies in optically and X-ray selected clusters

Many brightest cluster galaxies (BCGs) at the centers of X-ray selected clusters exhibit clear evidence for recent star formation. However, studies of BCGs in optically-selected clusters show that star formation is not enhanced when compared to control samples of non-BCGs of similar stellar mass. Here we analyze a sample of 113 BCGs in low redshift (z < 0.1), optically-selected clusters, a matc...

The X-ray Luminosity Function and Gas Mass Function for Optically-Selected Poor + Rich Clusters of Galaxies

We present the first X-ray Luminosity Function (XLF) for an optically-selected sample of 49 nearby poor clusters of galaxies and a sample of 67 Abell clusters with z ≤ 0.15. We have extended the measured cluster XLF by more than a factor of 10 in X-ray luminosity. Our poor cluster sample was drawn from an optical catalog of groups with 0.01 ≤ z ≤ 0.03 composed of Zwicky galaxies. The X-ray emis...

The Radio Luminosity Function of the NEP Distant Cluster Radio Galaxies

A complete sample of 18 X-ray selected clusters of galaxies belonging to the ROSAT North Ecliptic Pole (NEP) survey has been observed with the Very Large Array at 1.4 GHz. These are the most distant clusters in the X-ray survey with redshift in the range 0.3 < z < 0.8. Seventy-nine radio sources are detected within half an Abell radius with an observed peak brightness > 0.17 mJy beam−1, except ...
